Good news, Scary news. Back in School. Stressed and Worried.

I love my job. I actually do get paid quite well when I work. Right now the economy is so tough I haven’t made hardly any money this year. It seems as though every client I get cancells, flakes, stops paying on his or her invoice, or wants a refund to try and get something for nothing. I have really gotten discouraged recently. I hope school helps. It seems I am either flooded with work all at once or I have nothing to do at all. It is all pretty scary. I hope to be able to work for a firm for a while when I am out of school so that I can have a job where I don’t have to bring it home, I can work and come home and simply be home. Ya know? I would also love to be able to support my family and do for my husband what he did for me for so many years, while he made the money and let me live my dream. I would love to pay it forward. I would love to be able to work side by side with my husband in his business.

But…All in all, I really do love what I do. I can make upwards of $2500 dollars for one web site and/ or my hourly rate of $50 per hour. My average web site/ graphic design job is between $750 and $1200.

As far as school goes, I found out 36 of my college credits do transfer to my degree. I am also going to a school where the degree offering I am going for is brand new. It looks like due to the circumstances I will be in the first graduating class from DeVry with my Bachelor’s in Multimedia Design and Development and will finish 6-8 months before the first graduating class which will make me the first IN HISTORY to finish with this degree, which to me is huge and even more of a driving factor for me to finish what I am doing and be excited for it. This means graduation in 2 years or less!!!!

That is something to look forward to Right?

Update on my schooling situation…

I have been running around like mad for the past three days trying to get everything situated for financial aid. Being able to put myself through school was riding on several things.

First off, I am already in debt from taking out loans to get my A.A.S in digital design (graphic design, website design stuff)…15k in debt to be exact. I was planning on going back to school in October, which is when my baby turns 3 years old, and will start his preschool for Autism program. My differment on my current student loans was up in June, and I haven’t been able to pay a payment. I am currently 3 months behind. In order to borrow money for school, I cannot have any loans in default. Default is 6 + months behind/ no payment/ arrangements made. I have already reached my maximum differment for my situation, which leaves me stuck.

If I started school in Oct, I would be really close and pushing the 6 months behind thing. That had the potential of destroying my chances to go to school. I had to jump and make the choice to go now, put everything in fast forward motion and start up with online classes this week. I AM NOT READY, am scared out of my mind and needed the extra time to research other schools, other options, make sure this is what I wanted to do, and make sure I have all the money there is out there available to me as far as aid goes so I don’t have to take out so much money in loans.

I am so overwhelmed, scared, and worried that once finished I will be back in the same position I am now, unable to find a job, even farther in debt, and no solution in sight. We are trying to do so many things right now. My husband has been laid off since June, unemployment has run out, we haven’t heard back about the extension yet, he is trying to keep his business going/ get it off the ground. We are living off little to no income, figting for SSI for the baby, and not getting child support for one child which is court ordered.

Things are tight financially, it is all scary, and I am FREAKING OUT!!! It’s really hard to be excited about school at this point. Someone please give me a hug or some words of encouragement. I need it.

I enrolled in college today!

I have been debating and going back and forth as far as what I wanted to do with my life, how to get there, if I still want to do what I am doing etc…

I figured out that the reason why I am not getting anywhere is cause I only have my A.A.S. Most of what I have learned is self taught. Which leaves room for error. I have been looking here and there, trying to decide what to do and realized I want to be able to support my family and give my husband the chance he has given me to figure out what it is I want to do and be able to actually help financially.

I will have to take out a LOT more student loans, which is scary, but I get lifetime career placement and so much more. I am pretty excited, pretty nervous too. I already have so much on my plate but if you know me you know I thrive under pressure and was able to pull off National Honor Society and National Dean’s List when I got my A.A.S three years ago and that was with two jobs, an internship, and 2 young kids.

October 26th I will start my first round of classes! I know it’s a long post but I was excited. Lol. When everything is said and done I will have my Bachelor’s in Multimedia Design and Development with a major in Web Design and Development, in only 2 years and 8 months, and if any of my credits are transferrable it will be even less time than that.

My kids are even emotional. I think when they start school and everyone is back on a schedule everything will be better. Today is just frustrating. I would love to just get back in bed.

Web site mistakes followed by a list of ten RANDOM really awful web site’s. If your website is similar to one of these, or you know some one who has a similar web site, contact us for a free design quote.

How do I know if my web site is poorly designed? Below are some web design mistakes that could qualify your web site -as aesthetically bad, user-unfriendly, or even terrible.

While content is still the key to an effective and successful Web site, the presentation of that content is a major factor in holding the attention of your visitors and making sales. The look of your site is important, because it says something about your business and presents an image. But Web designers routinely sabotage their efforts by making mistakes in how they present their content. Here are 10 examples of common web design errors and some tips on how to avoid them.

Animation, gimmicks, and Flash. While most designers understand that Web surfers want to go straight to the content, there are some who still insist on either making you sit through a splash page, while others offer annoying flashing graphics. Studies show that no matter how well-intentioned these splash screens are, their main effect is to drive traffic away from the site.

In-your-face advertising. While standard pop-up ads are annoying, persistent full-screen ads are simply unacceptable. Visitors detest these, and most will leave the site rather than waiting for the ad to go away.

Navigation nightmares. If your users cannot get where they want to go in two clicks, many will leave. Too many choices, no site map, a “back” button that does not take them to the last page they visited, and other such navigation mistakes will cost you many customers.

Being unreachable. As concerns about security and identity theft increase, users want to be able to reach the people with whom they are doing business. Providing an email address and a phone number can help assuage your customers’ concerns.

No place for feedback, comments, or questions. Customers appreciate it when they feel you value their feedback. Providing a feedback or comment system is an easy way to start creating this goodwill. And it is also a great way to gain insight into how your customers think and get ideas for improving your site.

Cramming and crowding. You can have great content, but if it is lost in a sea of words or graphics, people will miss it. A little white space on a page goes a long way. It helps a reader find specific items, differentiate between areas of content and advertisements, and provides a more professional look.

Jargon. Business-to-business and high-tech sites are usually the worst offenders in packing their content with jargon. When writing any content for your site, keep the user in mind. He or she may not know all the arcana of your business, and may just want the basic facts of what your business is all about and what services or products you provide.

Bad graphics and boring photos. Bad graphics make your site look amateurish. Make sure the colors and text you use will show up clearly (and fit) on a range of monitors, including handheld devices. When you choose your photos and graphics, choose interesting graphics that say something about your business.

Torturing potential customers. When a user fills out a form online and needs to either change something or fill in a field which they left blank, they should be able to go back and make that change. Do not make the user start all over again. Many people will leave the site altogether rather than re-enter all their information.

Presenting products or services in only one way. Shoppers should be able to look up a product or service by any one of several methods. Assuming that everyone is shopping by the same set of criteria is a mistake, especially when it is very easy to allow people to sort by any of several methods. Make it easy to shop by product type, alphabetically, by size, by gender, by manufacturer, or by any other criteria shoppers are likely to use.
